TOPIC: ERRORS TO AVOID -3

“He removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it and called it Nehushtan.” 2 Kings 18:4

The ungrateful hearts of the children of Israel was mirrored through their many murmurs. At some tipping point, God sent fiery serpents to bite those who were murmuring rather than being thankful.

Several casualties were recorded at that time. When they cried out in their misery, God told Moses to make a serpent of brass and put it on a pole. The follow-up instruction was that anyone who sustained snake bite should look at the serpent on the pole.

Those who obeyed were healed and saved from death. That episode was in itself prophetic of how Jesus would be lifted up on the Cross at a future date for the salvation of the world.
Now, long after Israel had settled in the Promised Land, and long after there were no more incidences of snake bite, they still kept to the bronze serpent.

As a matter of fact, it had become an object of worship to the people, negating the commandment of God that there should be no other god besides Him. The point is this: the bronze serpent was ordained by God, but it outlived its purpose at some point and ought to have been discontinued.

All this is to illustrate the third error to avoid: Don’t hold on to what God has signed off; otherwise, you have an idol in your hands.
